Monpa Masked Dance Ritual
The Monpa Masked Dance Ritual is based on the Tawang-Torgya festival. Monks perform elaborate dances to ward off evil and protect the region from calamities. A sculpted torma effigy symbolizing destructive forces is paraded and then burned in a bonfire while prayers are chanted. On the final day, laypeople receive blessings and taste sweet tseril and the barley beer tse-chang offered by the monastery. Workshops on Thangka painting and butter sculpture accompany the ritual.
